Is time travel even possible

Time travel is the hypothetical activity of traveling into the past or future. It is a widely recognized concept in philosophy and fiction, particularly science fiction. 

Some say that the best evidence that time travel is not possible is that we have not been invaded by hordes of tourists from the future. Others say that it’s a bit like saying you can’t unscramble eggs once they’ve been cooked. 

Scientists are trying to figure out if time travel is even theoretically possible. If it is, it looks like it would take a whole lot more knowledge and resources than humans have now to do it. 

Some say that astrophysicists armed with powerful telescopes possess a unique form of time travel. As they peer into the vast expanse of the cosmos, they gaze into the past universe. Light from all galaxies and stars takes time to travel, and these beams of light carry information from the distant past.

Have you ever dreamed of traveling through time, like characters do in science fiction movies? For centuries, the concept of time travel has captivated people’s imaginations. Time travel is the concept of moving between different points in time, just like you move between different places. In movies, you might have seen characters using special machines, magical devices or even hopping into a futuristic car to travel backward or forward in time.

But is this just a fun idea for movies, or could it really happen?

The question of whether time is reversible remains one of the biggest unresolved questions in science. If the universe follows the laws of thermodynamics, it may not be possible. The second law of thermodynamics states that things in the universe can either remain the same or become more disordered over time.

Time is relative

However, physicist Albert Einstein’s theory of special relativity suggests that time passes at different rates for different people. Someone speeding along on a spaceship moving close to the speed of light – 671 million miles per hour! – will experience time slower than a person on Earth

Time isn’t the same everywhere.

Some scientists are exploring other ideas that could theoretically allow time travel. One concept involves wormholes, or hypothetical tunnels in space that could create shortcuts for journeys across the universe. If someone could build a wormhole and then figure out a way to move one end at close to the speed of light – like the hypothetical spaceship mentioned above – the moving end would age more slowly than the stationary end. Someone who entered the moving end and exited the wormhole through the stationary end would come out in their past

Famously, physicist Stephen Hawking tested the possibility of time travel by throwing a dinner party where invitations noting the date, time and coordinates were not sent out until after it had happened. His hope was that his invitation would be read by someone living in the future, who had capabilities to travel back in time. But no one showed up.

There are other scientific theories about time travel, including some weird physics that arise around wormholes, black holesand string theory. For the most part, though, time travel remains the domain of an ever-growing array of science fiction books, movies, television shows, comics, video games and more.

However, there’s a loophole in Einstein’s general theory of relativity that could allow a ship to traverse vast distances in less time than it would take light. The trick? It’s not the starship that’s moving — it’s the space around it.

In fact, scientists at NASA are right now working on the first practical field test toward proving the possibility of warp drives and faster-than-light travel. Maybe the warp drive in “Star Trek Into Darkness,” the franchise’s latest film opening this week, is possible after all

According to Einstein’s theory, an object with mass cannot go as fast or faster than the speed of light. The original “Star Trek” series ignored this “universal speed limit” in favor of a ship that could zip around the galaxy in a matter of days instead of decades. They tried to explain the ship’s faster-than-light capabilities by powering the warp engine with a “matter-antimatter” engine. Antimatter was a popular field of study in the 1960s, when creator Gene Roddenberry was first writing the series. When matter and antimatter collide, their mass is converted to kinetic energy in keeping with Einstein’s mass-energy equivalence formula, E=mc2.

In other words, matter-antimatter collision is a potentially powerful source of energy and fuel, but even that wouldn’t be enough to propel a starship to faster-than-light speeds( source google)

Space doesn’t have mass. And we know that it’s flexible: space has been expanding at a measurable rate ever since the Big Bang. We know this from observing the light of distant stars — over time, the wavelength of the stars’ light as it reaches Earth is lengthened in a process called “redshifting.” According to the Doppler effect, this means that the source of the wavelength is moving further away from the observer — i.e. Earth.

NASA’s warp drive project is a hypothetical propulsion technology that could allow for faster-than-light travel. However, there are still significant technical challenges to overcome before it could be built and tested. 

A warp drive works by contracting space in front of a vessel while expanding space behind it, creating a sort of wave that brings the vessel to its destination. The actual speed of a warp drive is unknown, but it could theoretically travel at faster-than-light speeds. 

Some scientists and researchers have proposed theoretical designs for a warp drive, including: 

  • Colliding matter and antimatter 
  • Converting explosive energy to propulsion 
  • Warp bubble 

According to the accepted laws of science, nothing can travel faster than light. However, scientists have successfully “warped” time in the lab, based on Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity. When this happens, it’s called time dilation

There have been some recent breakthroughs in warp drive research

  • New warp bubble A German physicist discovered a new type of warp bubble that could allow for faster-than-light travel by distorting space-time. 
  • Physical warp drive A new paper proposes a fully physically realized model for warp drive. This builds on an existing model that requires negative energy, which is an impossibility. 

However, some say that warp speed is still probably decades or centuries away: 

  • According to the accepted laws of science, nothing can travel faster than light. 
  • There is currently no theoretically plausible mechanism. 
  • No known particles can travel faster than light.

NASA is currently funding research into warp drive, but there is no guarantee that it will ever be possible to build a working warp drive. NASA’s stance on warp drive is that it is a possible but speculative technology. 

NASA scientists claim warp drive may soon become reality. White is leading a team of physicists and engineers in NASA to build the White-Juday Warp Field Interferometer. It is a beam splitting interferometer which can easily detect and generate the tiniest warp bubble. 

A Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency-funded research project at NASA’s Johnson Space Center may have accidentally discovered how to build a warp drive engine. The scientists published their findings in July

As of June 2023, NASA was researching advanced propulsion systems, including warp drives, that could enable faster-than-light travel. A new paper proposed a physically realized model for a warp drive, but warp speed is likely still decades or centuries away. 

Some say that a warp drive is very unlikely. According to JSTOR Daily, nothing can travel faster than light according to the accepted laws of science. However, a Reddit user says that there is currently no theoretically plausible mechanism

Here are some recent time travel science projects: 

  • Backwards time travel simulations Researchers at the University of Cambridge simulated backwards time travel by manipulating entanglement, a feature of quantum theory. 
  • Quantum entanglement A team of scientists studying quantum physics believe that time travel is possible through quantum entanglement. 
  • Backward time travel Scientists successfully simulated a method of backward time travel that allowed them to change an event after the fact one out of four times. 
  • Time-travel machine using a traversable wormhole A proposed time-travel machine would work by accelerating one end of a wormhole to a significant fraction of the speed of light and then bringing it back to the point of origin. 

Other time travel science projects include: 

  • Scientists from the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) and University of Vienna discovering how to speed up and reverse time 
  • The concept of self-consistent narratives, which tells us that anything a time traveler would alter or affect in the past would have to remain consistent with the future from which they journeyed

  1. There was a television program – “Quantum Leap” – that dealt with a man time-travelling and how he affected the times he visited. Very interesting to think about! And, of course, HG Wells’ “The Time Machine” is a classic in the genre!
