Earth’s temperature temporarily breached the 2°C threshold on November 17, 2023, making it the warmest November 17 on record. The temperature was more than 2°C hotter than levels before industrialization.
The temporary breach is a symptom of a planet getting steadily hotter. Scientists believe that if the breach persists for longer periods, it could cause irreversible damage to Earth.
The breach raises concerns about climate change, its catastrophic consequences, and the efforts to limit it. The world will likely be unable to stay below the internationally agreed temperature limit in early 2029.
The planet saw a breach in temperature by around two degrees on November 17, making it the warmest November 17 on record. The fluctuation in temperature was just temporary and a concern has risen that the earth was getting hotter and moving towards a climate crisis.
A 2°C increase in global temperatures could have devastating effects on the planet. Some of these effects include:
- Sea level rise: More than 70% of Earth’s coastlines could see sea levels rise more than 0.66 feet. This could lead to increased coastal flooding, beach erosion, and salinization of water supplies.
- Ecosystem changes: 13% of land, including forests and tundra, could experience radical changes to their natural biomes.
- Extinction: A third of all life on Earth could face extinction.
- Melting ice: Polar ice and the Greenland ice sheet could melt at faster rates.
- Disease: More people could die from heat, smog, and infectious disease.
Other effects include:
- Fiercer storms
- Disappearing coral
- Crop yields faltering
- More malnutrition
- Unprecedented heat waves
Yes, Earth is on track to warm above 2°C despite climate action. According to a United Nations report, the planet is expected to warm by 2.1–2.9°C by the end of the century. This is compared to pre-industrial times.
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) says that the world is on track to warm by nearly 3°C this century. This is unless governments take “relentless” action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
According to NASA, global temperatures are on track to rise by 2.5–4.5°C by 2100. This is without major action to reduce emissions.
The United Nations says that global surface temperature will continue to increase until at least the middle of the century.
There’s no single solution to control global warming. However, there are several steps that can be taken to mitigate its effects. These include:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions
- Improve energy efficiency
- Promote sustainable agriculture and forestry
- Recycle more
- Plant trees
- Switch to renewable energy
- Use energy-efficient devices
- Turn off electronics when not in use
Some other things that could reduce warming include:
- Eating less meat
- Putting some carbon dioxide back in the ground
- Adapting to some temperature change
Some major controls of the climate of an area are:
Latitude, Elevation, Nearby water, Ocean currents, Topography, Vegetation, Prevailing winds.

I have been watching so many shows about the Earth and how changes are being made to try and fix global warming. There are so many good ways to help our Earth yet when I mention things to others all I get is negativity. I don’t think the majority of people realize now is the time to stop complaining about changing the things we do and just do it before it’s too late. Excellent post!

Yes definitely global warming is a big concern and shifting to green energy is the best option to reduce global warming
