Russia’s Scientific International Research In Unique terrestrial Station (SIRIUS) project has six volunteers in isolation for 360 days. The mission is known as SIRIUS-23. The volunteers entered their mock spacecraft on November 14 at the Institute for Bio-Medical Problems (IBMP) in Moscow. The IBMP has been conducting experiments on human space exploration for 60 years.
The isolation is meant to mimic the conditions of a deep space journey. The volunteers will carry out a lunar mission.
The isolation is meant to address issues that might arise on a journey to Mars, such as:
- Dealing with different social circles
- Dealing with sex
- Keeping the mind occupied
- What happens if someone gets sick
- How they feel about being away from their family
The mission is known as SIRIUS-23. The nearly year-long stint by the six-person crew is carried out under the auspices of the legendary Institute for Bio-Medical Problems (IBMP) under the Russian Academy of Sciences.
SIRIUS-23 is a Russian space simulation experiment that began in November 2023. The experiment will last 365 days. The crew of six people will be isolated at the IBMP ground test facility. The crew will be both researchers and research subjects. They will partially recreate the conditions of a space flight. The crew will train in docking, orbiting, and landing for future lunar missions.
The SIRIUS-23 experiment is the fourth stage of earlier IBMP isolation experiments:
- SIRIUS-17: 17 days in 2017
- SIRIUS-19: 120 days in 2019
- SIRIUS-23: 240 days in 2021
The crew consists of five Russians and one Belarusian volunteer.
