According to new research, the material orbiting the minor planet Chiron is actually a disk of dust and gas that’s constantly shifting. This is different from what astronomers thought in 2011, when they observed a slight dimming of a star’s light twice before and after Chiron occulted the star. This led to the interpretation that Chiron had a double-ring system of dust.
Amanda Sickafoose, a Senior Scientist at the Planetary Science Institute, led the study. The study’s findings indicate that Chiron doesn’t have a stable ring system, but rather shows evidence of dynamic activity in the surrounding material.
Chiron is unusual because it has a detectable coma, indicating that it is a cometary body. However, it is over 50,000 times the characteristic volume of a comet, which is more commensurate with a large asteroid
What astronomers in 2011 took for rings around the minor planet Chiron is actually something much stranger, new research reveals. The true nature of the material orbiting the icy world remains unknown, but it appears to be an ever-shifting disk of dust and gas
Chiron has a gravitationally bound dust atmosphere in the inner 1,200 km of its coma. Chiron is made up of a mixture of water ice, organic material, silicate dust, and other frozen gases
Chiron is officially designated as a minor planet and a comet. It’s also been called a dwarf planet, centaur, and asteroid. Chiron is about 220 km in diameter, which is large for a comet nucleus. It orbits the sun every 18,500 days, coming as close as 8.55 AU and reaching as far as 18.87 AU from the sun
Chiron is unusual because it has a dual personality. It was the first of four objects discovered with similar orbits and properties. These objects are called Centaurs, after the half-man, half-horse beings from Greek mythology. Chiron was the first Centaur discovered.
Chiron is also unusual because:
- It was the first object discovered in an orbit outside the asteroid belt.
- It was once thought to be the most distant known asteroid.
- It has a composition similar to a comet nucleus.
- It produces jet-like dust structures.
- It has variable water in its spectra.
Chiron is unusual because it has a detectable coma, indicating that it is a cometary body, but it is over 50,000 times the characteristic volume of a comet, a size more commensurate with a large asteroid, which it was initially assumed to be
Here are some facts about Chiron, the minor planet:
- Size: Chiron is 166–312 kilometers in diameter, making it larger than most comets and 20 times larger than Halley’s Comet.
- Composition: Chiron is made up of a mixture of water ice, frozen gases, organic material, and silicate dust.
- Orbit: Chiron orbits the Sun in the outer solar system between the giant planets.
Chiron may also refer to:
- Chiron in Greek mythology A Centaur, the son of the Titan Cronus and Philyra, an Oceanid. Chiron was a healer, astrologer, and oracle. He was also a teacher and tutor to many culture heroes, including Achilles, Jason, and Actaeon.
- Bugatti Chiron A luxury sports car with a top speed of 420 kilometers per hour. The Chiron can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 2.3 seconds. It has six catalytic converters, some of which are six times larger than those in a standard car. (Full article source google)
