
According to Space.com, Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield would like to take a trip around the moon on SpaceX’s Starship. Hadfield said, “I think it’s got potential to be a magnificent vehicle”.
The Starship is 160 feet tall and 30 feet in diameter. It uses six Raptor engines, three of which are optimized for space travel. The engines produce 3,300,000 lbf of thrust.
Hadfield is a former NASA astronaut and military test pilot. He became an astronaut in 1992 and was the first Canadian to command the International Space Station and walk in space. He is also known for his popular social media posts.
In March 2023, Hadfield announced a launch agreement with SpaceX for a rover called FLEX to travel to the moon in mid-2026.

SpaceX’s Starship will not be able to fly directly to the moon. Instead, it will need to be refueled in Earth’s orbit before heading to deep space.
Here’s how the Starship will get to the moon:
- A NASA Space Launch System (SLS) launcher will launch a crewed Orion spacecraft from Earth.
- The Starship will rendezvous with the Orion spacecraft.
- Two astronauts will transfer from the Orion to the Starship.
- The Starship will descend to the lunar surface for a stay of about seven days.
SpaceX will also need to send an uncrewed Starship to the lunar surface and back before the Artemis 3 mission. This will demonstrate the craft’s safety and readiness for crewed flight.
SpaceX’s Starship is designed to be fully reusable. The Starship will belly-flop through the atmosphere like a sky diver before pivoting to a vertical position for landing
The Starship’s Super Heavy booster is also fully reusable. It will re-enter Earth’s atmosphere to land back at the launch site.
The Starship is expected to travel to the Moon, fly within 200 km of the Moon’s surface, and complete a full journey around the Moon before safely returning to Earth
The Starship spacecraft is protected during atmospheric reentry by its thermal protection system, using a ‘belly flop’ maneuver where the spacecraft turns from a horizontal into a vertical position, then lands using its engines
NASA plans to use Starships to land astronauts on the moon during the Artemis III and IV missions. These missions could take place as early as 2025 and 2028
Starship is designed to be the most powerful launch system ever developed. It can carry up to 100 people on long-duration, interplanetary flights. Starship will also help enable satellite delivery, the development of a Moon base, and point-to-point transport on Earth.
Starship will dock in a lunar NRHO with either the NASA Orion spacecraft or NASA lunar Gateway space station. It will then take on passengers before descending to the lunar surface and returning them after ascent.
Crews will board the HLS in lunar orbit and descend to the surface. They will collect samples, perform science experiments, and observe the lunar environment before returning to orbit in the HLS.
SpaceX’s goal is to use Starship as a transportation system to carry cargo and crew to Earth orbit, the Moon, and Mars. SpaceX also plans to use Starship vehicles as tankers to refuel other Starships for missions to Mars, the Moon, and geosynchronous orbit
SpaceX’s ultimate goal is to colonize Mars and create a livable, self-sustaining city. Elon Musk believes that Starship could be a significant step in “making humanity multiplanetary”. Musk’s goal is to build cities on Mars for humans to live on when Earth is no longer habitable.
SpaceX was founded in 2002 by Elon Musk with the goal of reducing space transportation costs and to colonize Mars. The company currently operates the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets along with the Dragon spacecraft
SpaceX’s Starship has a payload compartment that’s larger than any other fairing in development or operation. This will allow it to transport large space telescopes, satellites, and significant amounts of cargo to the Moon, Earth orbit, and beyond
Starship’s fully reusable design could also allow it to launch bigger and heavier payloads into space, and significantly reduce the cost of launching satellites, space telescopes, and people into space.
Starship is also designed to be the most economical and heaviest launch vehicle ever built. Future versions of Starship could carry more than 150 tons into orbit, which is 60 tons more than SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy.
Starship is also expected to play a key role in NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to establish a long-term human presence on the Moon. In April 2021, NASA awarded SpaceX with a $2.89 billion contract to develop Starship into a lander capable of delivering astronauts to the lunar surface.
