Albert Einstein’s theory of general relativity, published in 1915, explains why gravity pulls us down and not up. The theory describes gravity as the curvature of spacetime caused by the uneven distribution of mass.

According to the theory, objects with mass, like the Earth, bend and curve the fabric of the universe, called spacetime. This curvature is what we feel as gravity. 

Einstein’s theory introduces the concept of gravity wells, which are central to understanding gravitational pull. The theory also explains that space and time are not flat, but can be pushed and pulled, stretched and warped by matter. 

Einstein’s theory of gravity can be visualized by hopping on a trampoline. The trampoline’s flexible fabric of space is depressed by your mass. If you push a ball over the warp at your feet, it will curve in the direction of your mass.

In 1915, Albert Einstein figured out the answer when he published his theory of general relativity. The reason gravity pulls you toward the ground is that all objects with mass, like our Earth, actually bend and curve the fabric of the universe, called spacetime. That curvature is what you feel as gravity.

Gravity pulls us towards the center of the Earth because that’s where all of the Earth’s mass is concentrated.

Gravity is a force that attracts two objects towards each other. In the case of the Earth, the gravitational force is exerted by the Earth’s mass, causing objects to be pulled towards its center. 

The Earth is spherical, so when all the gravity forces exerted by every element of the Earth are added up, the net force is directed towards the center of the Earth. 

However, the pull is coming from all sides, so there is no “apparent” pull from the place where you are. This means it would “feel” as if there were no gravity at all. 

The amount of pull is related to the distance and mass. So everything around us mostly gets pulled towards the earth because the earth is the heaviest closest thing to us. 

Gravity is also what keeps the air around the earth from drifting into space. It’s what holds down our atmosphere, which allows us to survive.
