According to a Cornell-led team, a stellar corpse may have shown signs of life after a distant star’s explosion. The team’s research, published in Nature on November 15, 2023, suggests that the stellar corpse was the source of several intense flares observed over a number of months. This phenomenon is unprecedented and challenges existing theories about stellar deaths

The researchers believe that the activity after the star’s death is the explanation for the mysterious explosions. They believe that the explosions come from the star’s corpse, which is left behind as a black hole or neutron star.

The research used data from the University of Sheffield’s ULTRASPEC, a high-speed optical camera mounted on the 2.4m Thai National Telescope

Groundbreaking observations by a Cornell-led team reveal repeated energetic flares from a stellar corpse following a star’s explosion, challenging existing theories about stellar deaths and highlighting the possible role of black holes or neutron stars in such rare, intense phenomena

Stellar corpses are the remnants of stars that have died after using up their nuclear fuel. They are also known as dead stars

There are three types of stellar corpses:

  • White dwarfs: These are the remnants of stars like our sun. They are dense and dim, and have about the same mass as the sun but are the size of Earth.
  • Neutron stars: These are created when massive stars run out of fuel for their nuclear fusion processes.
  • Black holes: These are one of the three end states of stars.

Understanding the properties and behavior of stellar corpses is important for understanding the life cycle of stars and the mysteries of the universe.

Astronomers have observed a stellar corpse that showed signs of life after a distant star’s explosion. This is a phenomenon that astronomers have never seen before. The stellar corpse is believed to be the source of multiple energetic flares detected over several months.

The researchers were searching for a unique kind of stellar cataclysm known as a luminous fast blue optical transient, or LFBOT. LFBOTs are rare, intense phenomena that occur when a star explodes. The researchers officially labeled the LFBOT they found AT2022tsd and nicknamed it ‘the Tasmanian devil’.

The bright, brief flashes that appeared in the aftermath of the Tasmanian devil’s explosion lasted as little as a few minutes and were just as violent as the original explosion 100 days later. This was a scenario that had never been witnessed by astronomers before.

The researchers believe that the stellar corpse is either a black hole or a neutron star. These types of objects are known to be active after a star’s explosion. The researchers’ findings challenge existing theories about stellar deaths and highlight the possible role of black holes or neutron stars in such rare, intense phenomena.

According to a study published in November 2023, a distant star’s explosive death left behind an active stellar corpse that was likely the source of repeated energetic flares observed over several months. This phenomenon was a first for astronomers.

The source of the flares is officially labeled AT2022tsd and nicknamed the “Tasmanian devil”. The flares stem from a rare type of stellar cataclysm known as a luminous fast blue optical transient (LFBOT).

Over a 120-day period, 15 observatories tracked 14 irregular light pulses, which is likely only a fraction of the total number of flares released by the LFBOT.

The researchers believe that the activity after death is the explanation for the mysterious, extreme explosions. They believe that the explosions emerge from the corpse of the star itself, after it has died off and left behind a corpse as a black hole or neutron star.

The research also challenges existing theories about stellar deaths and highlights the possible role of black holes or neutron stars in such rare, intense phenomena (please don’t forget to subscribe like and donate to Skmaniablogs.in)
