NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) are planning to launch the world’s first wooden satellite, LignoSat, into space by summer 2024. The coffee mug-sized satellite is made from magnolia wood and is expected to burn up completely when it re-enters the atmosphere. 

Scientists are moving forward with the experimental satellite because wood can handle the conditions of low-Earth orbit. Wood does not block magnetic fields or electronic waves, so the antenna can be on the inside. The satellite is also expected to not become another piece of space junk at the end of its useful life. 

Magnolia wood was chosen for the satellite because its cells are small and uniform in size, making it the easiest wood to work with and the least likely to break. However, there are still a lot of unknowns regarding wooden space structures. 

The team will monitor the satellite’s reactions to radio waves and magnetic fields, and how the wooden shell protects the satellite’s semiconductor and chip.

The wooden satellite, named LignoSat, is expected to burn up completely when it re-enters the atmosphere, without leaving any harmful or polluting debris. The wooden satellite is a joint effort between Nasa, Japan’s space agency (JAXA), and Kyoto University

The satellite is about the size of a coffee mug and is made from magnolia wood.  In the vacuum of space, wood is stable and doesn’t burn or rot. However, when it re-enters Earth’s atmosphere, it incinerates into ash, leaving behind no harmful debris. This makes wood an environmentally friendly material that poses no risk to the planet. 

The goal of the project is to make space travel more eco-friendly and to reduce the problem of space junk. Space junk poses a threat to the Earth’s environment and other spacecraft

Japan was originally planning to launch the world’s first wooden satellite in 2023. The satellite was to be a joint effort between Kyoto University and the Sumitomo Forestry company. However, NASA and JAXA are now planning to launch the first wooden satellite, named LignoSat, by summer 2024

New Zealand had previously planned to launch a nanosatellite called WISA Woodsat in 2021, but the plan was delayed

The Soviet Union launched the world’s first artificial satellite, Sputnik I, on October 4, 1957. 

Japan launched its first man-made satellite, Ohsumi, on February 11, 1970. India launched its first satellite for education, EDUSAT, on September 20, 2004. 

As of 2022, other countries that have built or launched satellites include: 

Canada, Australia, Germany, Brazil, Algeria, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Argentina, Italy, Malaysia

India was the first country to launch a satellite for education on September 20, 2004. The satellite, called EDUSAT, was designed to provide educational services to schools and colleges in India. It is also known as GSAT-3. 

EDUSAT is a communications satellite that provides two-way communication to classrooms for delivering educational materials. It is used to meet the demand for an interactive satellite-based distance education system for India

As of December 23, 2023, more than 80 countries have operated artificial satellites. As of January 18, 2022, 75 countries have at least one satellite orbiting Earth

The United States has the most satellites in orbit, with 3,433 as of April 30, 2022. China is second, with 541. 

Several entities have developed and maintain their own space launch capability, including:

  • European countries through the European Space Agency 
  • Israel 
  • India 
  • Iran 
  • Both North and South Korea

  • Japan Has a fleet of meteorological, communication, astronomical, and earth observation satellites. Japan’s H-IIA rockets have a 95% success rate since their maiden flight. 
  • China Has 535 satellites used for tasks like satellite-based navigation and Earth observation. In 2022, China successfully launched the Shenzhou-15 manned spacecraft, which completed the construction of its space station, Tiangong.
