As of November 21, 2023, time travel is still impossible because theories can’t be tested practically. However, scientists are trying to make a time machine. 

The idea of a time machine was popularized by H. G. Wells’ 1895 novel The Time Machine. In 2020, Professor Ron Mallett from the University of Connecticut claimed to have written a scientific equation that could be used to create a device that takes people back in time. Mallett is a theoretical physicist, academic, and author who has been a faculty member of the University of Connecticut since 1975. 

Although many people are fascinated by the idea of changing the past or seeing the future before it’s due, no person has ever demonstrated the kind of back-and-forth time travel seen in science fiction.

The prototype laser loop he developed ends up bending time, hypothetically allowing movement back—at the farthest—to the moment the machine was turned on

Ronald Mallett loves the concept of time travel. He has since he was a kid. At 77, the former University of Connecticut physics professor still isn’t backing down from his theory: A spinning laser loop can bend time in an ongoing way. 

With his story chronicled anew by The Guardian, Mallett says his concept of creating an artificial black hole—which could muster a gravitational field that might lead to loops of time being created, allowing you to go to the past—comes in the form of his ring laser. The prototype, which has been running since 2019, can create a continuous rotating beam of light. Mallett says the “light can create gravity, and if gravity can affect time, then light itself can affect time

“Let’s say you have a cup of coffee in front of you right now,” he explains to The Guardian. “Start stirring the coffee with the spoon. It started swirling around, right? That’s what a rotating black hole does. In Einstein’s theory, space and time relate to each other. That’s why it’s called space-time. So as the black hole is rotating, it’s actually going to cause a twisting of time.”

And you’ve got to start that twisting concept somewhere. “The Wright Brothers didn’t just build a plane,” he said a couple of years ago. “First, they actually built a wind tunnel to determine the best configurations for aircraft wings. When it comes to a time machine, we need to build the wind tunnel before we can think about building the plane

So Mallett made his prototype machine. He thinks it could work. But it hasn’t yet, and if it does, it doesn’t have the infinite ability to go as far back as he’d like. Instead, he says the dip back in time can only go for as far back as when the loop was created. Think: 2019

The Time Machine is a 1895 science fiction novella by H. G. Wells. It is considered one of the first works of science fiction and the origin of the “time travel” subgenre. The story is about an unnamed narrator who tells the story of a time traveler who goes to the year 802,701 AD. There, he encounters two different human species, the Eloi and the Morlocks

According to Wikipedia, Wells’ depiction of the Eloi was inspired by the 1890 novel News from Nowhere. However, Wells’ universe is more savage and brutal. 

Wells reportedly came up with the idea for The Time Machine while lying on his deathbed

According to Quora, different mythologies have different answers to the question of who the first time traveler was. For example, in Christian mythology, the first time traveler was Adam, and in Hindu mythology, it was Manu

One of the first recorded time travel stories is in the Hindu epic, Mahabharata, which is thought to have been written around 400 BC. 

No one has ever demonstrated the kind of time travel seen in science fiction. However, cosmonaut Sergei Avdeyev spent 748 days on the Russian space station Mir during three separate missions. Because Mir was moving relative to Earth, it was also a time machine. Avdeyev is 0.02 seconds younger than he would have been had he never traveled in space.

Stephen Hawking was a well-known and influential scientist who believed that time travel was possible, but only within a black hole. He also believed that time travel is not possible, and never will be, because we have not been invaded by tourists from the future

Hawking’s theories do not support backward time travel because new matter would need to be created. He also believed that “M theory”, which suggests the universe has seven hidden dimensions, makes rapid space travel and time travel back possible.

According to NASA, time travel is possible, but not in the way you might expect. Einstein’s theory of relativity states that time and motion are relative to each other, and nothing can go faster than the speed of light. Time travel happens through what’s called “time dilation”. 

However, physicists generally agree that time travel to the past is highly unlikely, if not impossible. According to a theoretical physicist, time travel cannot be possible because if it was, we would already be doing it. Some argue that it is forbidden by the laws of physics, like the second law of thermodynamics or relativity. 

According to the BBC, physicists are far from certain about how time actually works. So far, what we can say with confidence is that traveling into the future is achievable, but traveling into the past is either wildly difficult or absolutely impossible. 

However, according to Wikipedia, time travel to the past is theoretically possible in certain general relativity spacetime geometries that permit traveling faster than the speed of light.

According to Quora, time travel is not possible within the scope of mainstream physics. However, some speculative theories suggest that time travel is possible. 

According to NASA, humans can’t travel back in time, but they can travel through time. For example, clocks on airplanes and satellites travel at a different speed than those on Earth. Humans also travel one year in time between birthdays. 

According to The Conversation, traveling back in time is impossible. Even sending information back in time is difficult to imagine, because it can change things that have already happened. 

According to Cosmos Magazine, time travel is probably impossible. Even if it were possible, Hawking and others have argued that you could never travel back before the moment your time machine was built. 

According to the BBC, traveling into the future is potentially possible, but traveling into the past may be impossible.
