Studying lunar lava tubes can help with the origin of the moon and future exploration. Lunar lava tubes are underground tunnels that form from lava flows. They are a promising location for human habitation because they have a more benign environment than the surface of the moon. For example, the tubes can be pressurized with breathable air to create habitable volumes larger than those constructed using manufactured materials. 

Lunar lava tubes can also be useful for in-situ resource utilization efforts. For example, lava tubes near the poles of the moon may contain massive ice formations that can be mined and turned into water.

Further study of lava tubes on Earth and a detailed search on the Moon and Mars may ultimately demonstrate that lava tubes are valuable targets for both robotic and manned exploration missions.

According to some scientists, lava tubes on Mars could be roomy habitats for humans. Lava tubes are large underground tunnels that remain after lava burns through the ground. They could be large enough to fit city center-sized groups of astronauts. 

Lava tubes on Mars could protect life forms from: high surface temperatures, ultraviolet radiation, wind storms, and regolith dust.

Future human habitationThe interior of lava tubes, along with other subsurface cavities, could prove to be prime locations for future crewed missions to Mars by providing shelter for habitats
