J.P. Morgan was a banker and industrialist who helped create the modern American economy. He was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1837 into a banking family. Morgan is known for reorganizing businesses to make them more stable and profitable, and gaining control of them. He reorganized many industrial companies and railroads after the Panic of 1893, including U.S. Steel, the first billion-dollar corporation in the world. He also helped establish General Electric and International Harvester. 

During the Panic of 1907, Morgan organized a coalition of financiers that saved the American monetary system. He also led in resupplying the U.S. Treasury’s gold reserve during the depression that followed the panic of 1893. Morgan’s reputation and actions helped lead to the creation of the Federal Reserve System. 

Morgan was a dominant figure in American capitalism, and many believed he ran the entire economy. Biographer Ron Chernow estimated his fortune at $80 million, which is equivalent to $2.5 billion in 2023. 

Morgan died in Rome, Italy in 1913, leaving his fortune and business to his son, John Pierpont Morgan Jr..
