A British startup, Invisibility Shield Co., created something straight out of a ‘Harry Potter’ film. The startup has made a 6-foot-tall “Megashield” sold for $828, which they claim that it can make multiple people invisible.

According to a report by the New York Post, the startup has made shields by using ultra-large, precision-engineered lens arrays, which form the face of each shield and redirect light that reflects off the person standing behind the shield, away from the observer.

These innovative shields use clever lens design to bend light around an object. By strategically capturing background light and directing it towards the viewer, they create the illusion of whatever’s behind them simply disappearing.

However, it’s not perfect invisibility. The technology creates a slight blur, like a hidden object behind a frosted glass window

The possibilities are endless but most important of all, these shields are great fun. They’re fun to play around with and exciting for us to make,” Invisibility Shield designer Tristan Thompson told South West News Service.

Invisibility Shield Co. first released its product in 2022, advertising a full-size shield measuring 3 feet tall for $354 and a smaller version standing at 8 inches tall being sold for $54.

The team began crowdfunding on Kickstarter in hopes of “turning science fiction into reality” in 2022 and quickly surpassed their $6,600 goal expecting to ship to customers by the end of that year

Harry Potter invisibility cloak

The Cloak of Invisibility is a Deathly Hallow in the Harry Potter series that makes the wearer invisible. Death made the cloak in the 13th century, and it has been owned by many people, including Death, Ignotus Peverell, Iolanthe Peverell, and generations of Potters

Invisibility cloaks may be made from the hair of a Demiguise, a magical creature that can become invisible at will. They may also be made by enchanting a traveling cloak with the Disillusionment Charm or Bedazzling Hex.

Harry Potter receives the Cloak of Invisibility anonymously from Headmaster Albus Dumbledore on Christmas morning. The cloak once belonged to Dumbledore’s father, but Harry doesn’t learn who gave it to him until later.

You can also buy a Warner Bros. Harry Potter Invisibility Cloak, which replicates the cloak’s magical effects. The cloak comes with the Wow! Stuff app, which allows you to recreate scenes from the Harry Potter films. You can use the app to take photos or videos of yourself, family, friends, or objects covered by the cloak.

Science fiction becomes reality

Science fiction has often predicted technologies that have become reality. Here are some examples:

  • Space stations The International Space Station (ISS) was inspired by the Space Station V from 2001: A Space Odyssey
  • Tablets Apple claims to have invented the tablet with the release of its iPad
  • Driverless cars The main character jumps into a driverless car in the 1990 film Total Recall
  • Machine learning IBM’s Arthur Samuel coded a checkers player that could beat him in a 1950s workshop at Dartmouth
  • Lab-grown meat Dutch scientist Mark Post grew a synthetic burger from bovine stem cells in 2013
  • Long-term heat storage In 2007, Alberta, Canada used high midyear temperatures to warm 52 homes through the winter
  • Artificial intelligence AI has been a staple of science fiction for decades, and today we have AI-powered devices like Siri and Alexa that are becoming increasingly common
  • Virtual reality VR is a technology that allows users to interact with a simulated environment
  • Prosthetics and bionic limbs Bionic limbs, once relegated to the realm of science fiction, in films like Mortal Kombat and RoboCop, are now a reality
  • Smartphones Today, smartphones are powerful pocket-sized devices that encompass communication, information access, and entertainment

Other examples of science fiction that has become reality include: video chatting, cell phones, and drones

Several forms of technologies that were once considered science fiction have now become reality. Here are some examples: – Video chat: Today, video chat is a standard feature on most smartphones and computers, enabling us to connect with others around the globe
