Black Hole News: A new study has claimed that small black holes are colliding due to big black holes. Due to this, a ‘traffic jam’ like situation is being created in space.

Black Hole Collision: Black holes are one of the most mysterious things in our universe. There are giant black holes at the center of every large galaxy. Scientists have claimed in a new study that the collision of these black holes creates a ‘traffic jam’ like situation in the universe. The black hole drags everything around it. Everything present in the galaxy revolves around it. This rotation affects the disk of matter which black holes make their food. Apart from this, this rotation also affects stars and other but smaller black holes. According to the new study, such curved behavior causes a cosmic ‘traffic jam’ around supermassive black holes. This jam slows down the orbits of small stellar black holes. Affected black holes do not move around. They may be forced to collide, merge and form a massive black hole. The results of the research have been published in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The black holes that cause such ‘traffic jams’ in space are very big. Their mass is several million times (or even billions of times) greater than that of our Sun. This process happens again and again due to which more black holes collide, with time larger black holes are formed whose mass is three hundred or a few hundred times more than the Sun. That is, the environment around a very massive black hole is helpful in making other black holes bigger

Some very massive black holes have a disk of gas and dust around them, which is called an accretion disk. This disk feeds the black hole. The gravity of supermassive black holes causes powerful tidal waves in these accretion disks, due to which they shine and a region called Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN) is created.

This discovery of ‘traffic jam’ has been made by scientists of Monash University of Australia. He did research on the dynamics of accretion disks and black holes. When stellar-mass black holes sit in these accretion disks, interactions with the gas around them can cause them to escape through the disk. According to the research team, this creates areas called ‘migration traps’ in supermassive black holes. This creates the possibility of two stellar black holes falling face to face, colliding and merging

Black hole ‘traffic jams’ are forcing cosmic monsters to collide, new study finds. Supermassive black holes may create conditions akin to “cosmic intersections with failed traffic lights” that make collisions between smaller stellar-mass black holes inevitable

And you thought rush hour was bad on Earth! New research suggests some “cosmic intersections” have failed “traffic lights” that deem black hole collisions almost inevitable

The new traffic-jam findings come courtesy of a team led by scientists from Monash University who looked at the dynamics found in accretion disks as well as the black holes that are embedded within them

Team leader and Monash University School of Physics and Astronomy researcher Evgeni Grishin took the traffic jam analogy a step further, in fact, comparing these migration traps for stellar-mass black holes around supermassive black holes to busy intersections without working traffic lights here on Earth

We looked at how many and where we’d have these busy intersections,” Grishin said. “Thermal effects play a crucial role in this process, influencing the location and stability of migration traps. One implication is that we don’t see migration traps occurring in active galaxies with large luminosity.”

Despite these significant findings, much about the physics of black holes and their surrounding environments remains unknown.”
