Atlas movie ( humans and AI)

Jennifer Lopez, whose considerable star power cauterises the plot holes, and Simu Liu looking well-dressed and menacing, slug it out in this fairly enjoyable AI-versus-human battle

Just when you crave mindless pyrotechnics on screen, the universe — via Netflix — answers with Atlas. Brad Peyton who kept us deliriously amused with San Andreas and Rampage returns with this lovely sci-fi actioner, which pretends to be discussing deep and meaningful things like whether AI has a soul in its trillion lines of code, when it actually just wants to have fun blowing things up.  And blow things it does in jolly spectacular style

In the future, AI becomes self aware and led by Harlan (Simu Liu) turns on human beings. After several attacks including one on Bengaluru which leaves “over 500,000 killed in an AI-controlled drone strikes,” Harlan flees to a planet, GR-39, in the Andromeda galaxy.

The International Coalition of Nations (ICN) is formed to fight the threat and Harlan is declared public enemy no 1, the first AI terrorist. 28 years later, a grumpy counter-terrorism analyst working for the ICN, Atlas (Jennifer Lopez), is woken up by her smart home — she had fallen asleep playing chess with it

That she is brainy is obvious from her winning streak in chess of 71, and her genius-level IQ is indicated by her glamourously wild Einstein hair. General Boothe (Mark Strong), who refuses to abandon Atlas “because she is not user-friendly”, has an assignment for her. Casca (Abraham Popoola), Harlan’s fearsome AI soldier has been captured and Boothe wants Atlas to interrogate him

Atlas (why would parents burden their child with such a name), has some history with Harlan and Casca, as it was her scientist mum Val Shepherd (Lana Parrilla) who created Harlan. Using the principles of a smartphone, she created a cognitive intelligence… and see where that led. Atlas tricks Casca into revealing where Harlan is holed up and the ICN decide to send out a mission led by Colonel Banks (Sterling K. Brown) to capture Harlan or rather his CPU.

Atlas insists on going along as she knows Harlan best having spent 28 years studying the little critter. Though she tells the crew to eschew all digital trails, coming to the first briefing with printouts, they do not listen and it is up to Atlas to save the world overcoming her distrust of artificially intelligent beings starting with her AI companion, Smith (Gregory James Cohan).

Hollywood must be really scared of AI when the subject keeps popping up in movies like every single week, and sadly, Atlas itself feels like it is the product of being written by AI itself

Hollywood is going through changes, and it seems like the arrival of AI as a tool to make some of the most mundane and tedious tasks a thing of the past is being, and with good reason, actually be used just to replace every single writer, and beyond that even the actors that we see acting in our entertainment. Atlas, is a new sci-fi film dealing with the dangers of AI and starring Jennifer Lopez, but for a movie that talks about what it means to have a soul, it has none.

Nothing is more important in a fantasy or science fiction film than using the story to set up the world the characters live in. Still, Atlas offers almost zero attempts at world-building, and it feels devoid of any attempt to create something memorable. With efforts like this, it should be worth watching something made by AI and see if there is any difference. If writers want to ensure they are never replaced, they must step up their game, as AI could easily write stuff like this

The plot of atlas

The usually reliable Lopez plays the titular character, a super-smart scientist with a deep hatred for artificial intelligence. She lives by herself in a hyper-futuristic Los Angeles overrun by AI, with the looming threat of absolute annihilation orchestrated by a rogue cyborg named Harlan, played by Simu Liu. Atlas and Harlan have a history; she inadvertently initiated his spiral into villainy back when she was a child, in effect kick-starting the decline of the human race itself. In that regard, she’s a lot like the James Franco character from the Planet of the Apes reboot movies — he set out to cure Alzheimer’s but ended up angering the sole chimpanzee capable of starting a revolution against humans. Oops.

About Atlas

Netflix’s Atlas is the latest feature to join on the ‘AI is bad, really bad’ bandwagon. The action thriller relies on its lead, played by Jennifer Lopez, establishing a meaningful relationship with a computer program after being burned previously in her past by robots. However, even as the film tries hard to introduce a bit of soul in its proceeding, it never manages to immerse the audience into its complicated world

Atlas is also about self-discovery, learning to let go and moving on in life. It is a story of friendship and like the way Lopez sees all movies like a love story, this too is like one of them. What the story lacks is the exploration of the back story leaving the audiences in a haze and underusing brilliant actors like Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lopez plays the lead character in this thrilling movie set in space. She’s known for her other projects like “The Mother”, “Hustlers”, and “The Backup Plan”, and so I’d assumed “Atlas” would be in safe hands. However, her performance, along with the general narrative and action sequences, have been put under the spotlight since its debut

Who is Smith in the movie Atlas?

The Brad Peyton–directed Atlas is, however, a science fiction movie, and Smith is a robot. Most specifically, he’s a mecha suit, powered by a synthetic consciousness voiced by Gregory James Cohan, into whose pilot seat the AI-averse Atlas is shoved right before she crash lands on an alien planet.

Did Smith survive in Atlas?

Smith is not dead! When Atlas gets synchronised with ARC10, we expect to hear the classic introductory protocol, like the one shown earlier in the movie. Instead, the AI’s voice remembers she likes her coffee with three sugars and doesn’t bother asking if she prefers pie or cake, because he already knows

Who is Harlan in Atlas?

Love, for better or worse.

And so if we tell you that now, we have J.Lo in “Atlas,” playing a data analyst who travels to a planet populated solely by evil AI bots preparing to extinguish humanity, well, your only question really should be, “Where’s the love story?”

Glad you asked! Because there is one. It may not be with a human. It may actually be with a computer program. But there is one. Because “Atlas,” an often ridiculous sci-fi epic with dialogue cheesier than a Brie wheel but also an old-fashioned, human heart o’ gold, is a J.Lo movie. Through and through.

We’ll give the filmmakers some credit: “Atlas,” directed by Brad Peyton (“San Andreas”) is timely. And not just because Lopez has been in the news lately, but because the subject is AI — which has been in the news even more than Bennifer, believe it or not.

Is self aware AI possible in future

While we have yet to observe AI genuinely attaining self-awareness, the astounding progress in AI research and development urges us to ponder the potential outcomes of such a situation

How will we know if AI is self-aware?

Introspection test: Require the AI to introspect and report its thought processes, beliefs, and intentions. An inability to do so could imply an absence of conscious self-awareness

How close are we to a sentient AI?

Can AI go beyond humans?

The term “singularity” is sometimes used to describe a situation in which an AI system develops agency and grows beyond human ability to control it. So far, experts continue to debate when—and whether—this is likely to occur. The first autonomous robots were created by William Grey Walter

What will AI look like in 10 years?
