A paper written by research scientists at Harvard University suggests aliens could be living underground or on the moon, or even walking among us and posing as humans.

The paper, which has not been peer-reviewed, looks at a newer, “unconventional” theory called “cryptoterrestrial” hypothesis. The paper was written by researchers with Harvard’s Human Flourishing Program, but a note at the top of the report called it a “speculative thought piece” and emphasized it’s not affiliated with the program at Harvard. 

What is the cryptoterrestrial hypothesis? 

According to the paper, scientific discussion around unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP), the official government term for UFOs, has been dominated by two main classifications: human technology (conventional terrestrial origin) or extraterrestrial origin (civilizations arriving from somewhere other than Earth

• Cryptoterrestrials came to Earth from a different time period or planet, and concealed themselves in stealth
• A form of intelligent species evolved separately from humans on Earth and are hiding on our planet. The paper suggests these could be an ape-like descendant or descendants of “unknown, intelligent dinosaurs”
• A “remnant form” of ancient civilization exists on Earth, despite being largely destroyed long ago, possibly by a flood or other natural disaster
• The possibility of something likened to “earthbound angels” — creatures that are, perhaps, of a magical supernatural origin, like “fairies, elves, nymphs”

Theories about Aliens Living Near Humans

The study explores four main theories regarding aliens living in close proximity to humans:

Human Cryptoterrestrials: This theory suggests that after catastrophic events like floods, a highly advanced but largely decimated ancient human civilization may continue to exist in some form

Theropod or Hominid Cryptoterrestrials:This explanation considers the possibility of a non-human society dwelling underground, potentially evolving from terrestrial creatures such as intelligent dinosaurs or ape-like hominids.

Extratempestrial or Former Extraterrestrial Cryptoterrestrials: These beings might have traveled from the Moon or other places to visit Earth and have hidden themselves among us

Magical Cryptoterrestrials”: These entities are akin to “earthbound angels,” having a magical rather than technological relationship with humans, similar to folklore creatures like fairies and elves. This theory’s primary weakness is its perceived oddity, especially for those accustomed to conventional scientific explanations.

• SETI Searches for signals from extraterrestrial intelligence by monitoring electromagnetic radiation for signs of transmissions from other planets. The Breakthrough Listen Project, announced in 2015, is a $100 million, 10-year attempt to detect signals from nearby stars. 
• Exoplanet missions Look for planets that might be habitable. For example, astronomers can use transit spectroscopy to analyze the light from exoplanet atmospheres, which can reveal a spectrum of gases and chemicals that might be linked to life. 
• Life-hunting missions Land on moons or planets to collect samples. For example, NASA’s Perseverance rover landed on Mars in February 2021, and other missions are scheduled to launch in the coming years, including Europa Clipper to orbit Jupiter in 2024 and Dragonfly to fly through Titan’s skies in 2027. 
• Biosignatures Look for potential indicators that living processes might be taking place, such as lots of oxygen in an atmosphere, artificial lights, industrial pollutants, or electromagnetic radiation.
