Mysterious Object In Universe: A team of citizen scientists working on a NASA project has discovered a mysterious object. This thing is running out of our galaxy at a speed of 1 million miles per hour (16,09,344 KM/hour).

Science News in Hindi: There is something so powerful in space that it can throw a ‘star’ out of the galaxy at a speed of one million miles per hour. NASA scientists are surprised by the new discovery of citizen scientists. They have discovered a mysterious body which may be a dwarf star. This body is running away from our galaxy – Milky Way at a terrible speed.

टीम ने यह खोज तब की जब वे NASA के Backyard Worlds Planet 9 प्रोजेक्ट पर काम कर रहे थे. इसमें नासा के WISE (Wide-field Infrared Explorer) मिशन की तस्वीरों का इस्तेमाल किया जाता है. 2009 से 2011 के बीच चले मिशन में आसमान को इंफ्रारेड लाइट में मैप किया गया था. जब से नासा के वैज्ञानिक इसमें शामिल हुए हैं, तब से उन्होंने इस पिंड के बारे में और अधिक जानकारी हासिल की है

The team made this discovery when they were working on NASA’s Backyard Worlds Planet 9 project. In this, photographs from NASA’s WISE (Wide-field Infrared Explorer) mission are used. In the mission that ran between 2009 and 2011, the sky was mapped in infrared light. Since NASA scientists became involved, they have learned more about this object

What is this mass? 1 million miles per hour… such a high speed means that it will soon break free from the gravity of the Milky Way and enter space. Scientists are not entirely sure what this celestial body is, but it is probably a brown dwarf star. These are stars that are larger than planets but their mass is so low that they cannot sustain nuclear fusion for long periods of time like our Sun.

NASA researchers call this object CWISE J124909.08+362116.0. They believe that it once coexisted with another celestial body, because such binary pairs are common in the Milky Way. It is possible that it was the companion of a white dwarf star that became a supernova.

Where did this thing come from? Data obtained from the W. M. Keck Observatory in Maunakea, Hawaii, shows that this fast-flying object is very old. NASA officials have written that it is ‘likely one of the first generations of stars in our galaxy.’ If this object is indeed a brown dwarf, it would be the first time that such an object has been found in a disordered, high-speed orbit and capable of escaping our galaxy.

Citizen science is such a great concept. Using the combined computing power of a gazillion (exaggeration) desktop and laptops to churn through data is an excellent and efficient way of analysing volumes of data. This has been shown yet again as a star has been identified to be hurtling out to intergalactic space! Most stars in the Milky Way are not travelling fast enough to be able to escape its immense gravity but the suspected brown dwarf is travelling at 1.5 million km/h, fast enough to escape. 

The concept of using members of the public to support scientific endeavours dates back further than you might think. One of the earliest examples can be seen in the 19th century when the Christmas Bird Count was launched by the Audubon Society in 1900. It encouraged members of the public to track bird populations. When it comes to space science projects like SETI@Home are among those that spring to mind. 

It’s not just the nature of the object that is perplexing astronomers, its high speed to has been the subject of much debate. One theory suggests it could have been a part of a binary system with a white dwarf. The white dwarf would slowly accrete material from its companion leading to an explosion when the material reaches a critical point. This event may have provided the energy to accelerate the object out of the system and beyond.  Alternatively it may have been a part of a cluster which was ejected through gravitational interactions.
