Are aliens more powerful than humans

Based on current scientific understanding, it is highly likely that some alien civilizations could be far more powerful than humans, especially if they are significantly more advanced technologically, having had more time to evolve and develop across a longer period of time on their planet; however, since we haven’t yet detected any extraterrestrial life, we can’t definitively say whether any aliens are more powerful than humans

Really, “aside from our brains and capable hands”? Those are our key developments, the things that make us the absurdly successful species we are. It’s like saying that bears aren’t well suited for survival aside from their great strength and teeth. There are many, many different strategies species can follow which allow them to survive: speed, stealth, large numbers, strength, and so on, and any given species gets a very limited number of traits to follow its survival strategy. It’s downright tautological that if you take away the trait which successfully allows them to survive, none of them end up well suited for survival. Including bears and apes. And so it’s likely to be with any aliens, with the added complications that they’ll have evolved in different environments than ours. Some may be stronger than us, but since immense strength clearly isn’t necessary to survival if you’ve got some other useful traits, I don’t think the odds are very strong.

The perception that aliens, if they exist, might be more powerful than humans stems from several factors:

  1. Advanced Technology: Speculative scenarios often suggest that extraterrestrial civilizations could possess technology far beyond our current capabilities. This could include advanced space travel, energy manipulation, or even biological enhancements, leading to the belief that they might have superior power.
  2. Longevity and Evolution: If intelligent life has existed elsewhere in the universe for millions or billions of years, they may have had significantly more time to develop their societies, cultures, and technologies compared to humanity, which has only been around for a few hundred thousand years.
  3. Understanding of the Universe: Aliens might have a deeper understanding of physics, biology, and the cosmos, allowing them to harness resources or manipulate environments in ways that humans cannot.
  4. Resource Access: Some theories suggest that advanced civilizations could exploit resources from multiple planets or even stars, giving them an advantage in terms of energy and materials.
  5. Different Biological Capabilities: If extraterrestrial life forms have evolved under different conditions, they might possess unique abilities (e.g., enhanced physical strength, cognitive abilities, or even forms of communication) that could make them seem more powerful.
  6. Narrative and Media Influence: Science fiction often portrays aliens as either benevolent or malevolent beings with extraordinary powers, influencing public perception and speculation about the capabilities of potential extraterrestrial life.

It’s important to note that these ideas are largely speculative, as there is currently no empirical evidence of extraterrestrial life, let alone its capabilities.

Are humans the most powerful creature?

The strongest animal in the world is the African bush elephant, which is capable of lifting 6,000kg, its own body weight from lying down. Even their trunks can lift over 200kg, thanks to over 40,000 muscles. For context, an adult humans have just over 600 muscles in their entire bodies

If alien life is artificially intelligent, it may be stranger than we can imagine

We’ve long assumed that aliens will be like us, but there’s every reason to think they are instead a form of unfathomable AI, says the UK astronomer royal Lord Martin Rees.

It’s taken more than four billion years for intelligent life to emerge by natural selection on Earth, but there are billions more years ahead in our planet’s lifetime. Over that time, intelligence could develop in entirely new directions.

We human beings may be near the end of Darwinian evolution – no longer required to become the fittest to survive – but technological evolution of artificially intelligent minds is only just beginning. It may be only one or two more centuries before humans are overtaken or transcended by inorganic intelligence. If this happens, our species would have been just a brief interlude in Earth’s history before the machines take over.

That raises a profound question about the wider cosmos: are aliens more likely to be flesh and blood like us, or something more artificial? And if they are more like machines, what would they be like and how might we detect them?

Not like us

Many assume that human beings are the peak of intelligence, but it’s possible that our species may represent a stage on the path towards minds that are more artificial. This could explain why the cosmos seems so empty of life like us. If an evolutionary transition to non-organic intelligence is inevitable across the Universe, our telescopes would be most unlikely to catch human-like intelligence in the sliver of time when it was still embodied in that form. It is perhaps more likely that the aliens would be the remote electronic progeny of other organic creatures that existed long ago.

The prospect of inorganic alien intelligence raises some striking possibilities. If these beings are out there, they would act and think totally differently to us. They may not want to be detected. Indeed, their intentions may be impossible to fathom. To quote Charles Darwin, “A dog might as well speculate on the mind of [Isaac] Newton.” However, we might deduce a few things.

For one, non-organic intelligence may have no use for an atmosphere, or the planet on which they originated. Interstellar voyages – or even intergalactic voyages – would hold no terrors for near-immortals.

Indeed, they may prefer to live in zero-gravity, because there you can make very large, very lightweight objects. If you wanted to build a huge, elaborate gossamer-thin structure to harvest energy, for example, it’s easier in space than on a planet.

If they have silicon-based brains, they might realise they could expend less energy in colder regions away from planetary systems

It’s also not obvious that they would need to live in orbit around a star. Perhaps they’d have new ways of getting energy that we just can’t envisage yet. If they have silicon-based brains, they might realise that the energy needed for processing “bits” is less at low temperatures, so they would expend less energy in colder regions away from planetary systems. They might even choose to hibernate for billions of years until the cosmic microwave background – the leftover radiation from the Big Bang – is further cooled by the continuing expansion of the Universe

They may not have the same base desires as us. We have evolved through Darwinian pressures to be an expansionist species. Selection has favoured intelligence but also aggression. But if Darwinian pressures do not apply to these artificial entities, there’s no reason why they should be aggressive. They may just want to think deep thoughts

Whether or not aliens are more powerful than humans is a complex question with no definitive answer. There are many factors to consider, including:

  • We haven’t met any aliens yet. All of our knowledge about aliens is based on speculation and science fiction. We don’t know what they would be like, how they would think, or what their capabilities would be.
  • “Powerful” is a subjective term. It could refer to physical strength, technological advancement, intelligence, or other factors. It’s difficult to compare these things without a common frame of reference.
  • Even if aliens are more powerful than us in some ways, that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re better. Different species have different strengths and weaknesses. Humans, for example, are relatively weak physically compared to many animals, but we have intelligence and technology that allow us to thrive.
Some people believe that aliens are likely to be more powerful than humans because they would have had to overcome greater challenges to reach us. Others argue that humans are a unique and resilient species, and that we could potentially compete with or even surpass aliens in some areas.
Ultimately, the question of whether aliens are more powerful than humans is a matter of speculation. We simply don’t have enough information to say for sure.

  1. You’re right, without evidence of extraterrestrial life, it’s all speculation. Our strengths, like intelligence and adaptability, may not be the only factors for survival, and alien civilizations could evolve in ways we can’t imagine. Until we discover more, we can’t know for sure.
