We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of…” – a humbling and uplifting view of our place in the cosmos

This famous quote by physicist Stephen Hawking captures both our physical insignificance and our extraordinary cognitive achievements.

The Full Quote

“We are just an advanced breed of monkeys on a minor planet of a very average star. But we can understand the Universe. That makes us something very special.” [12]

The Dual Perspective

  • The Humbling Reality: Structurally and genetically, humans share the vast majority of their DNA with primates. Our home, Earth, is a tiny rocky planet orbiting an unremarkable star among billions in a standard spiral galaxy. [1234]
  • The Uplifting Truth: Despite our biological limits and fragile existence, the human mind has developed the tools to map the cosmos, split the atom, and calculate the age of existence.

Our significance does not come from our physical size or location in space, but from our unique ability to observe, question, and comprehend the universe

Cosmic Quotes on Human Existence

  • Carl Sagan (Pale Blue Dot): “Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves.” [1234]
  • Neil deGrasse Tyson: “We are all connected; To each other, biologically. To the earth, chemically. To the rest of the universe, atomically.”
  • Richard Feynman: “I, a universe of atoms, an atom in the universe.”

The Common Thread

These perspectives do not seek to make us feel worthless. Instead, they shift our focus away from superficial earthly conflicts. They remind us that we are the universe experiencing itself.

Edwin Hubble’s Reality-Shattering Discoveries

  • Beyond the Milky Way: In 1923, Hubble used the Hooke Telescope to measure cosmic distances using Cepheid variable stars. He proved that the “Andromeda Nebula” was not a gas cloud in our galaxy, but an entirely separate galaxy millions of light-years away. [1234]
  • The Expanding Universe: By 1929, he observed that light from distant galaxies shifted toward the red end of the spectrum (redshift). This proved galaxies are moving away from us, revealing that the universe is actively expanding. [12345]
  • Cosmic Demotion: Hubble’s work instantly downgraded the Milky Way from “the entire universe” to just one of billions of isolated galaxies racing through an ever-growing cosmos. [123]

Hubble literally expanded the horizon of human knowledge, proving that our “minor planet” is nestled inside a minor galaxy in a virtually infinite sea of space. [1]

  1. AS much as I don’t care for STEVEN HAWKING, CARL SAGAN, and that brand of theorist, Steven makes a very salient point. To quote from the Bible, “What is man that thou art mindful of him?….Yet you have made him a little lower than the angels!” BOOK OF PSALMS 8:4-9.
