The researchers used a laser to study the molecular dynamics of a glass sample. The scattered light created a pattern of light and dark spots. Statistical analysis of the pattern allowed the researchers to calculate the fluctuations over time and determine the material’s internal clock’s pace. 

The researchers say the internal clock’s ticking represents the passage of time for the material itself. 

The study also provides the first physical evidence of a material-based time reversal.

In 2022, scientists simulated the localized electron idea in a quantum computer and created a time-reversal operation that would bring it back to the original state.

However, the Schrödinger equation, which governs the behavior of quantum systems, is not time reversible. This means that the evolution of quantum systems is not the same if time is reversed. 

Some quantum processes are time reversible, but this is not a general property of quantum mechanics. For example, in a two quantum-bit (qubit) setup simulating the localized electron, researchers were able to reverse time in 85 percent of the cases. In a three-qubit setup, only 50 percent of the cases were successful, and more errors occurred.

Quantum travel is still a hypothetical concept that has not been proven
