On December 9, 2023, China’s LandSpace launched three satellites into orbit using a rocket fueled by methane and liquid oxygen. The launch was the first of its kind in the world. The satellites were named Honghu, Honghu 2, and TY-33.

The rocket, called the Zhuque-2 Y-3, took off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in northwest China. The rocket is 49.5 meters long and can carry 1,500 kilograms to a 500-kilometer sun-synchronous orbit.

LandSpace’s launch beat SpaceX to the technology.  The company says the launch has pioneered a new stage for the commercialization of launching liquid-powered rockets in China. It could also strengthen investor confidence in methane as a potential rocket fuel. Methane is considered cost effective and can help slash costs and support reusable rockets.

The launch was part of a collaboration between LandSpace and toy designer Pop Mart International Group Ltd.. Pop Mart’s logo was on the rocket’s exterior.

In world first, China’s LandSpace methane rocket sends satellites into orbit. A Chinese company became the first in the world to launch satellites with rockets fueled by methane and liquid oxygen on Saturday, beating SpaceX to the technology and raising hopes for its commercial applications

The Zhuque-2 Y-3 rocket launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China on December 9, 2023.  The rocket was developed by LandSpace, a private aerospace company based in Beijing.  The rocket launched at 7:39 AM Beijing time.  It sent three satellites into orbit: Honghu, Honghu 2, and TY-33.

The Zhuque-2 Y-3 is the third flight of the Zhuque-2 launch vehicle. It’s the only methane-fueled rocket to reach orbit twice. LandSpace also launched the world’s first methane-liquid rocket.

The Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center is located in the Gobi desert of Inner Mongolia

China on Saturday successfully launched the Zhuque-2 Y-3 carrier rocket into space from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China, Azernews reports Xinhua. The carrier rocket blasted off at 7:39 a.m. (Beijing Time) and sent three satellites — Honghu, Honghu-2 and TY-33 — into planned orbit

LandSpace is a Beijing-based company that has launched several rockets:

  • Zhuque-1: Launched on October 27, 2018, but the payload failed to reach orbit
  • Zhuque-2: Launched on July 12, 2023, becoming the first methalox rocket to reach orbit
  • Zhuque-2 Y3: Launched on December 9, 2023, becoming the first methane-liquid rocket

LandSpace is also developing a reusable rocket and expects a test flight in 2025.

LandSpace is a private Chinese company that develops and operates rockets. They focus on the small and medium-sized commercial aerospace application market. LandSpace develops liquid fuel rocket engines and commercial launch vehicles with independent intellectual property rights

LandSpace was founded in June 2015 by Tsinghua University and Zhang Changwu. They are a member of the Space Industry since 2018.

LandSpace is also the name of a landscape garden design and build company based in London, Suffolk, and Essex. They offer services such as garden consultations, garden design, and landscape construction

The first methane-propelled rocket to reach orbit was China’s Zhuque-2 Y-2. The rocket launched on July 12, 2023 and was the first launch vehicle in domestic civil and commercial aerospace to successfully enter orbit based on a self-developed liquid engine.

The 162 ft (49.5 meters) long Zhuque-2 uses methane and liquid oxygen for propellant. This innovative technology holds promise for reusable rockets and marks a new era in rocketry.

The first rocket to fly high enough to get into space was the V2 missile, which was first launched by Germany in 1942. The first rocket to launch something into space was used to launch Sputnik, the first satellite, on October 4, 1957.(full article source google)
