Top computer scientists say the future of artificial intelligence is similar to that of Star Trek. Leading computer scientists from around the world have shared their vision for the future of artificial intelligence—and it resembles the capabilities of Star Trek character “The Borg.”

Experts from the likes of Loughborough University, MIT, and Yale say we are set to see the emergence of “Collective AI,” where numerous artificial intelligence units, each capable of continuously acquiring new knowledge and skills, form a network to share information with each other.

The researchers—who unveiled their vision in a perspective paper in Nature Machine Intelligence—recognize the striking similarities between Collective AI and many science fiction concepts. One example they cite is The Borg, cybernetic organisms featured in the Star Trek universe, which operate and share knowledge through a linked hive-mind

Loughborough University’s Dr. Andrea Soltoggio, the research lead, explained, “Instant knowledge sharing across a collective network of AI units capable of continuously learning and adapting to new data will enable rapid responses to novel situations, challenges, or threats.

“For example, in a cybersecurity setting if one AI unit identifies a threat, it can quickly share knowledge and prompt a collective response—much like how the human immune system protects the body from outside invaders

Different artificial intelligence units will one day be able to team up and share information with each other – just like the Borg in Star Trek, according to leading computer experts.

It could also lead to the development of disaster response robots that can quickly adapt to the conditions they are dispatched in, or personalised medical agents that improve health outcomes by merging cutting-edge medical knowledge with patient-specific information

Borg in Star Trek

The Borg are a group of cybernetic organisms (cyborgs) that appear in Star Trek as recurring antagonists. They are from the Delta Quadrant and are known for their goal of “perfection” through the assimilation of sentient species, technologies, and knowledge. The Borg are made up of organic and artificial life that has been developing for thousands of centuries. They are primarily a nomadic space-bearing race that occupies planets with a typical population of nine billion drones. The Borg are said to be extremely physically strong and have a superior intellect

The Borg are linked in a hive mind called “The Collective”. They don’t value the Federation’s belief in individuality, and instead seek to strengthen the Collective in its pursuit of perfection by adding others’ biological and technological distinctiveness to their own. They also seek to assimilate their enemies’ minds and flesh. For example, Captain Jean-Luc Picard still endures residual trauma decades later following his assimilation into the Borg. 

The Borg have a large structure called the Unicomplex, which is made up of thousands of sub-structures and housed many of their vessels. They also have their own territory and would venture out on exploration missions.
